Well-woman visits

While women often put others’ needs ahead of their own, remember that you need to show yourself love, too. For that reason, don’t forget to schedule a well-woman visit with your provider every year. At this visit, in addition to getting a physical exam, you’ll have the chance to discuss any health concerns as well as your health goals.

Your doctor will begin by going over your personal and family health history. Next, she your doctor will perform a physical exam, which will likely include a breast exam and a pelvic exam. For women ages 21–29, the exam should include a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer at least once every three years. Women ages 30–65 should also have a Pap test alone every three years, a Pap test and human papillomavirus (HPV) co-test every five years or an HPV test alone every five years.

Your doctor might also recommend additional screenings. These could include:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure or cholesterol
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

In addition, your doctor can help you schedule your annual mammogram to screen for breast cancer.

Be sure to use this opportunity to discuss any unusual symptoms or other concerns you have, including mental health issues. Remember, your doctor is there to help you in any way you need.
