Colorectal Cancer Program

Get the support of our multidisciplinary team

Among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in America is colorectal cancer, ranking third for both men and women in the U.S. This cancer begins with the growth of polyps within the wall of the colorectal region of the body, located just before the opening of the anus. If these polyps grow large enough, they can travel into deeper layers of the region and, from there, potentially into lymph nodes and more distant parts of the body.

How our team can help

At University Medical Center New Orleans, our Cancer Center takes a team approach to helping our patients get the care and attention they need.

Our patients receive the care of a team that includes such specialists as:

  • Medical oncologists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Pathologists
  • Diagnostic and interventional radiologists
  • Cancer patient navigators

Possible treatments

At UMCNO, we offer treatment plans that can prevent a person from losing the use of their sphincter and requiring an ostomy. In cases where avoiding either a temporary or permanent ostomy isn’t possible, our patient care nurses can help to explain managing and living with an ostomy.
