What is a mammogram?
Mammograms allow imaging specialists to use X-rays and get a closer look at breast tissue to diagnose potential warning signs of breast disease. If you or your physician notice any unusual pain, lumps, or discharge in your breast, it’s time for a mammogram. Learn more in our health library.
Breast health and preventive care
The sooner breast cancer is detected, the better. With regular mammograms and exams, you can find problems sooner and treat problems. These can include other noncancerous or benign conditions as well. Learn more in our health library.

Now available: 3D mammography
Thanks to a new imaging process called breast tomosynthesis, University Medical Center now offers 3D mammography that offers a clearer and more accurate view of the breast. By taking multiple images of the breast, radiologists gain a clearer view of tissue layers and any areas that may be cause for concern.
3D breast imaging offers benefits such as:
- Earlier, more accurate detection of breast cancers that were missed during a mammogram
- Higher accuracy imaging
- Reduction of additional biopsies or tests
- Better detection abilities for small tumors which are more common
