Adult Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit in New Orleans

University Medical Center's Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit provides compassionate care to adults who are in need of short-term hospitalization for crisis intervention, assessment and symptom stabilization. Patients are placed on the therapeutic unit that would be of most benefit for their condition.

Our therapeutic units have the ability to address every patient’s needs, including:

  • Comprehensive physical and psychological assessments/evaluations
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Recreational therapy
  • Medication management
  • Comprehensive discharge planning

Therapeutic units

The 30-bed Acute Stabilization Units provide primarily care for patients with illnesses such as Schizophrenia and can deliver specialized care in First Episode Psychosis. Patients are provided close follow up as they recover.

The 15-bed Mood Disorders Unit provides specialized care for patients with mood disorders such as Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder. Electroconvulsive therapy is available for treatment resistant conditions for inpatients as well as for outpatient follow-up.

The 15-bed Addiction Disorders Unit provides comprehensive care for patients who have an addiction disorder and concurrent psychiatric disorder such as depression or anxiety. Follow up rehabilitative care with our community partners is ensured.

Visitor guidelines

All visitors must first check in with Hospital Public Safety and obtain a visitor’s pass. Visitor's passes are issued only to visitors who have the correct patient identification number. Your visitor's pass must be worn at all times and visible to staff on the unit to gain entrance. Visitor passes must be returned to Public Safety when the visit is completed. If calling to inquire about a patient in this unit, you must provide the patient identification number.

Visiting hours

Weekdays (excluding holidays): 6:30 – 7:30 pm

Weekends: 1 – 3 pm

Training programs
